Acne scarring is a problem experienced by many people. It can have an effect on how they feel about themselves and their self confidence.

Acne can cause a number of different types of acne scars including ice pick, boxcar, rolling and keloid scars. Dr Manoharan utilises a wide range of treatment options including subcision, RF Needling, fractionated and ablative lasers – often used in combination – to customise you a treatment plan based on the type of acne scarring you have, your skin type and your lifestyle.

Dr Manoharan treats acne scars on a daily basis with life changing results.

Rolling Scars

Rolling scars usually present as broad indentations in the skin with sloping edges. Their texture is rough and can be stubborn to treat.  With scar tissue often tethering the scar to the facia, rolling scars are often treated with a combination of surgical release techniques (subcision), RF needling and fractionated or ablative laser treatments.

Ice Pick Scars

Ice pick scars present as narrow, deep scars. They are best treated surgically, often using a punch excision to correct the scar indentation, and other times using the TCA CROSS method. TCA CROSS is a technique which uses trichloracetic acid inserted into the scar to cause a controlled burn and scar destruction, encouraging new, more normal skin production.

Boxcar Scars

Boxcar scars present as broad, shallow depressions with defined edges. They form from inflammatory acne and can be treated using the TCA CROSS method, radio-frequency needling, fractionated or ablative laser treatments.

Keloid Scars

Keloid scars are thickened, raised scars that form due to an excess of scar tissue. They occur when the body overproduces collagen at a damaged tissue site and can be treated by combining repeated steroid injection with lasers.

Mixed Scars

Most people will have a combination of scars types, and therefore we always require that you make an appointment to have a consultation with Dr Manoharan who will be able to feel your scars and recommend the best treatment course to obtain optimal results for your particular scars. There is no “one size fits all” approach when it comes to acne scars.

Subscision is a surgical technique that releases scars bound to underlying tissue. It is performed under local anaesthetic and generally has no down time.

Radio-Frequency (RF) Needling

RF needling delivers both the physical needling and the controlled radio frequency energy into the deeper lakes of tissue which helps to break down scar tissue and promote collagen remodelling.

Fractionated Lasers

Fractionated lasers deliver energy in micro-columns to the skin, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. This method is at the forefront of acne scar treatment, as it enables scars to be treated at depth, with little discomfort and a reduced recovery time.

Ablative Lasers

Ablative laser treatment is effective in the revision of severe acne scars for those who are prepared for a longer downtime period in return for dramatic results. In addition to removing damaged skin, the laser stimulates underlying skin cells to trigger collagen production to break down scars. Dr. Manoharan is one of the country’s most experienced specialists in Erbium:YAG and CO2 lasers for the treatment of severe acne scars.
