Traumatic scarring results from a significant, and often sudden, injury to the skin. The sources of the injury can include household burns, animal bites, sharp objects that penetrate the skin and friction or scraping.
Due to the nature of the injury, traumatic scars often occur in visible areas and often are repaired without immediate priority given to the longer-term aesthetics. In traumatic scarring cases, Dr Manoharan sees a range of conditions from patients with subtle visible scarring to severe skin distortions that can restrict movement.
Dr Manoharan sees many patients where traumatic scarring has affected them physically, socially and psychologically, and works with them closely to produce real results and improve their outlook going forward.
Subscision is a surgical technique that physically releases scars that are bound to underlying tissue. For traumatic scars, this can be very important part of your treatment plan as it releases the tension immediately giving immediate improvement. It is performed under local anaesthetic and generally has no down time.
Vascular lasers, such as a pulsed dye laser, are excellent for traumatic scars that have left a red colouration, as the wavelength of these lasers target this colour specifically. This treatment option is often used to treat traumatic scars and can be used as a multiple treatment series for non-raised, red scars, or in combination with other treatment options for scars that are raised.
Dr Manoharan utilises the Syneron Candela VBeam and the Cynosure Cynergy pulsed-dye lasers which are both very powerful devices that provide excellent results and deliver safe and comfortable treatments for patients.
Non-ablative lasers are an excellent option for mild to moderate scarring, or for people with less available downtime than is required for ablative laser resurfacing. The Fraxel provides excellent results with low downtime due to the fractionated technology which delivers micro-columns of laser energy into the skin, leaving the surrounding tissue intact.
Fractional laser resurfacing provides deeper and therefore more dramatic results than those which can be achieved with non-ablative lasers. Dr Manoharan utilises the UltraPulse CO2 laser on the DeepFX™ & ActiveFX™ Fractional Modes as this is the most advanced scar laser available, and these fractionated settings allow for specific treatments to be tailored to your scar condition and skin type.
Ablative laser resurfacing provides the most dramatic improvement and can treat significant scarring. For ablative laser treatments, Dr Manoharan uses both the UltraPulse CO2 laser on the SCAAR FX™ Mode and the Sciton Joule with the Erbium:YAG. Both of these lasers can treat scars to significant depth in a single pulse and are ideal for treating deep, thick lesions. In addition to removing damaged skin, the laser stimulates underlying skin cells to trigger collagen production to break down scars. These treatments require the longest downtime, but provide outstanding results.
