Radiofrequency Microneedling (RFMN) for Acne Scar Treatment: Everything You Need to Know

Acne scars can be a source of frustration and self-consciousness for many people. Fortunately, RFMN is a minimally invasive treatment option that can help reduce the appearance of acne scars. In this article, we’ll dive into what RFMN is, how it works, its benefits, and what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure.

What is Radiofrequency Microneedling?

Radiofrequency Microneedling is a medical procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate collagen production in the skin. The treatment involves a device that uses tiny needles to penetrate the skin and deliver RF energy. The heat from the RF energy stimulates collagen production, which helps to improve the texture and appearance of the skin.

How Does RF Needling Work for Acne Scars?

Acne scars are a result of damage to the skin’s collagen fibers, which can lead to uneven texture and pigmentation. RF needling works by stimulating the production of collagen in the skin, which helps to repair the damage caused by acne.

During the procedure, the RF needling handpiece is passed over the treatment area, delivering RF energy to the skin through a series of tiny needles. The needles penetrate the skin at various depths, depending on the severity of the acne scars. The RF energy heats the skin, stimulating collagen production and improving the texture and appearance of the skin.

What are the Benefits of RF Needling for Acne Scar Treatment?

RF needling offers several benefits for people with acne scars:

  • Minimally Invasive: RF needling is a minimally invasive treatment option that does not require surgery or extensive recovery time.
  • Stimulates Collagen Production: The RF energy from the treatment stimulates collagen production, which helps to improve the texture and appearance of the skin.
  • Targeted Treatment: RF needling can be used to target specific areas of the skin, which means that surrounding areas are not affected.
  • Minimal Downtime: Recovery time after RF needling is minimal, with most patients able to return to their daily activities within a few days.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The results of RF needling can last for several years, making it a cost-effective treatment option. Dr Manoharan or his team will often prescribe a maintenance plan to ensure that you get the ideal long-term results.

What Can You Expect Before the RF Needling Procedure?

Before the RF needling procedure, you’ll have a consultation with Dr Manoharan or one of his therapists or nurses. During this consultation, you will discuss your medical history and your treatment goals. You will also have a thorough examination of your skin to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment.

You may need to stop using certain active products or using certain skincare products in the days leading up to the procedure. Your doctor will provide you with detailed instructions on how to prepare for the treatment.

What Can You Expect During the RF Needling Procedure?

On the day of the procedure, an anaesthetic cream will be applied to the treatment area to minimize discomfort. The RF needling device will then be passed over the treatment area, delivering RF energy through the tiny needles.

Most people describe the procedure as feeling like a mild prickling sensation on the skin. You may feel some discomfort, but the anaesthetic should keep it to a minimum. The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.

What Can You Expect After the RF Needling Procedure?

After the procedure, you may experience some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort around the treatment area. These side effects should resolve within a few days. You’ll be given post-treatment instructions to follow, which may include avoiding certain skincare products and sun exposure for a few days after the procedure. You will also be given an aftercare pack and may be given some prescription after-care medications.

You may start to see results from the treatment within a few weeks, even after your first session, but generally you will be prescribed a series of treatments, after which you will be reviewed and have your skin analysed to ensure you are achieving results with the treatment plan.
